Background And Achievements

Coach Mike Winkeljohn is widely recognized as one of the most sought-after coaches in the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) today. With a 5th Degree Black Belt in Kempo Karate, he has an impressive background as a multiple-time ISKA, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai World Champion across various organizations. Throughout his career, Coach Winkeljohn has trained and coached some of the sport’s finest athletes, including legendary fighters such as Jon Jones, Carlos Condit, Holly Holm, Andrei Arlovski, and Donald Cerrone.

Origins And Rise To Prominence

Native to Albuquerque, New Mexico, Coach Wink grew up amidst challenging circumstances. However, his love and passion for martial arts provided him with an escape and opened up exceptional opportunities, ultimately leading him to become one of the most polarizing figures in the world of MMA. It was through his partnership with Coach Greg Jackson that they established the highly regarded Jackson Wink MMA Academy, considered one of the best MMA camps globally.

A Life-Altering Incident And Resilience

In 2009, during a routine mitt session, Coach Winkeljohn experienced a rare and unfortunate accident that resulted in the loss of his right eye. Despite this life-altering moment, he displayed remarkable resilience and refused to let it hinder his career. The incident tested his character, but he emerged stronger, garnering admiration from family, friends, fighters, and fellow coaches. Coach Winkeljohn’s unwavering determination and perseverance became defining traits, earning him the reputation of being the “baddest man on the block.”

The Evolution Of A Coach

Coach Winkeljohn’s journey in combat sports was not predetermined. Growing up, he lacked focus in his early athletic pursuits, trying various sports without finding his true calling. However, a humbling experience in a street fight ignited a change in his perspective. Seeking further instruction, he found his way to Bill Packer’s gym, where he discovered the fusion of American Kenpo Karate with traditional martial arts principles. Under Packer’s guidance, Winkeljohn’s skills flourished, and he became an accomplished kickboxer with notable achievements, including multiple titles.

Transitioning From Fighter To Coach

While still an active competitor, Coach Winkeljohn began coaching, unaware of the tremendous impact it would have on his life. It wasn’t until he retired from kickboxing that he truly found success as a coach. Focusing solely on the development of his students, Winkeljohn’s coaching career skyrocketed, allowing him to channel his full energy and expertise toward their growth and success.

Coach Winkeljohn’s legacy extends beyond his personal achievements. He is revered for his ability to inspire and guide athletes to reach their full potential. Through his partnership with Coach Greg Jackson, he has contributed significantly to the success of Jackson Wink MMA Academy and the athletes who train there.

Despite facing adversity and overcoming personal challenges, Coach Mike Winkeljohn remains an influential figure in the world of MMA.
